International Domain Names Translated

New feature added that will attempt at translating IDN domain names into English using Google Translate.

Ok. So you are searching through the available expiring IDN domain names at DropAce and you haven’t a clue as to what language the name is in or what it means. If you don’t have translation software installed on your computer, or a translation toolbar in your browser, you might have copied the internationalized domain name and pasted it in “Translate text or webpage” at Google Translate, or some other service such as Babel Fish. Now, when you click the IDN name on the domain listings page, which takes you to the domain name’s details, DropAce will connect with Google Translate and attempt at identifying the term’s language and retrieving its translation.

Keep in mind, Google Translate is far from being a perfect translating tool. For example if the domain name consists of two or more words, or a word with a number, without any hyphens, Google will may have trouble identifying the language or declare that the language is English and not translate it at all, returning the original search term as the translation.

  • examples:
    • örenbayan
      • incorrect: örenbayan Language: English, Translated: örenbayan
      • correct: ören bayan Language: Turkish, Translated: historical women
    • 4frei
      • incorrect: 4frei Language: German, Translated: 4frei
      • correct: 4 frei Language: German, Translated: 4 free

You can always click the “powered by Google” link, beneath the translation, and open Google Translate and try to rearrange or split the term and see if you find a more appropriate translation.

Note for IE8 users:

When viewing IDN names in IE8’s standard mode, the non-ascii characters will not display properly. In order to view the IDN names, you should switch to “Compatibility View” (see image).
IE8 compatibilty view

There is work-around, by adding this special meta tag: <meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=EmulateIE7″/> to the web page’s header, which I haven’t added for now, as it breaks some of the design and layout of the website.
